Alternative Pathways is a non-profit service provider located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The individuals who recieve their services from Alternative Pathways have varying levels of ability, and live independently. Many of the homes are owned by individuals receiving services who then rent rooms to people who will have the choice to use our staff for their services. Most of the homes are in the same neighborhood, allowing us to enjoy a sense of community. The few "satellite homes" that aren't in the neighborhood are on bus lines or within walking distance. The office is attached to the back of the director's home and is accessible to staff and clients throughout the day.
How are we different from an Adult Foster Care (AFC) home?
AFC homes are licensed homes for adults . The homes are licensed and monitored by the state. In many of these homes the residents are required to have educational or vocational to go to during the day because the home is understaffed at those times.
Here, consumers can own their homes and rent out rooms to other individuals or rent from someone in the community. Unlike licensed AFC's, Alternative Pathways enjoys the freedom to explore many options for the consumers during the day. Some have jobs, some attend a day program or school, while others work on job readiness skills at home and in the community.
People receiving services from our staff have the right to refuse their scheduled staff at any time in favor of other plans or simply to spend time at home alone or with friends.
Alternative Pathways has been around since 1996 and is unique in its ability to give our consumers independence as well as structure.
